Height

There is a mix of building heights across the local area, though properties along the High Street are predominantly low-rise at 2 storeys.

There are examples of taller development along the Shirley High Street and Shirley Street. These include Selby Place and Hatherley, Lumsden, Withewood Mansion blocks and Burlington Mansions. Shirley Towers represents the tallest building in the area at 16 storeys.

Emerging Local Plan Issues and Options (2022)

Policy DE3 Tall Buildings: the Council will support the delivery of tall and landmark buildings to enhance Southampton’s sense of identity and enable the city to develop as a distinctly recognisable location. Generally, the principle of tall buildings will be supported in Southampton’s city, town and district centres as well as within a 400m buffer (of the city’s key transport hubs and corridors).
